On Colour & a Custom Mosaic Story

March has had me thinking quite a lot about the different ways people approach mosaic, and how personal each piece can become. Recently, I was contacted by Maureen, who asked whether I could put together a custom house number mosaic kit for her. She had a clear idea in mind—a palette of soft, gentle colours.

I must admit, I am naturally drawn to stronger, bolder tones, so selecting tiles for this kit required a slightly different approach for me. It was an interesting exercise in stepping away from my usual instincts and working within a softer, more restrained palette. At the same time, the house numbers themselves needed to remain clear and visible, which meant incorporating stronger, more defined colours for contrast.

The result was a balance between bold and soft—structure and subtlety. I assembled the personalised mosaic kit along with step-by-step guidance and sent it off, never quite knowing how it would all come together. A little while later, Maureen sent me photographs of the completed piece.

It is always rather special to see something move from someone’s idea, to a collection of chosen tiles, and finally into a finished work. This was Maureen’s first ever mosaic, and she did it beautifully. The soft colours provide a lovely contrast to the bold numbers, and her chosen palette shows just how mosaics can reflect different personalities and aesthetics. It served as a reminder that mosaics can be adapted, personalised, and shaped into something that belongs entirely to the maker.

🌿 A Thought on Colour If you are working on a mosaic at the moment, it may be worth pausing before you begin and considering using colours that are different from those you are naturally drawn to. You may be surprised at how beautifully your mosaic turns out. Even the simplest changes in colour can alter the overall effect quite significantly.

💬 Custom Mosaic Kits If you have an idea for a mosaic you would like to create and need a little guidance—or would like it put together as a kit—please do feel free to get in touch. I am always happy to help bring an idea to life.

Kind regards
