Add Depth and Interest to Your Mosaics by Mixing Tile Types

Add Depth and Interest to Your Mosaics by Mixing Tile Types

One of the wonderful things about mosaic art is that there are no strict rules. Every artist develops their own style, and every project is an opportunity to experiment with colour, texture and shape.

As winter settles in across South Africa, many of us are naturally drawn to warm, comforting colours. Rich golds, vibrant yellows, fiery oranges and deep reds bring a sense of warmth and energy to our homes and our artwork. But colour is only one part of creating a truly captivating mosaic.

This month, I'd like to share one of my favourite ways to add depth and visual interest to a mosaic: combining different types of mosaic tiles within the same piece.

Don't Be Afraid to Mix Different Tiles
It's quite common to see beautiful mosaics created using just one type of tile. There's certainly nothing wrong with this approach, and many stunning artworks are created this way. However, introducing different tile finishes, textures, sizes and shapes can elevate a design dramatically. The contrast between glossy and matte surfaces, smooth and textured finishes, or square and irregular shapes adds richness that catches the eye and makes your artwork feel more alive.

With the incredible variety of mosaic materials available today, there are endless opportunities to experiment and create something truly unique.

A Beautiful Customer Example
One of our talented Eye-Dears customers, Sara Webster, has mastered this technique beautifully. Her stunning hummingbird mosaic is a wonderful example of how different tile finishes work together to create depth, realism and movement. Rather than relying on a single type of tile, Sara has carefully selected materials that complement each part of the design, allowing the bird and flowers to stand out against the background.
The finished piece is full of texture, colour and personality.

It's All in the Details
Looking more closely at the hummingbird reveals the thoughtful choices that make this mosaic so successful.
Sara has used:
* Matte glass tiles for the bird's lower body, creating the softer appearance of feathers.
* Glossy plain glass tiles on the upper body to reflect light and bring the vibrant green plumage to life.
* Long, narrow pieces to form the wing feathers and tail, giving the bird a graceful sense of movement.
* Smaller rounded pieces to soften the bird's lower body and add natural texture.
These subtle variations may seem small individually, but together they create an artwork that feels wonderfully lifelike.

Why Texture Matters
Our eyes naturally notice contrast.
When every tile has the same finish and shape, a mosaic can sometimes appear quite flat. By mixing different materials, you create highlights, shadows and changes in texture that encourage people to keep looking.
Think about nature itself.
A bird's feathers aren't all identical. Flower petals reflect light differently from leaves. Tree bark looks completely different from water or stone.
Using different mosaic materials helps recreate those natural variations and gives your artwork greater depth and realism.

Experiment in Your Next Project
If you've never mixed tile types before, why not make it your next creative challenge?
You could try:
* Combining matte and glossy glass tiles.
* Mixing ceramic and glass tiles.
* Adding crystal glass tiles for sparkle.
* Using decorative inserts to create focal points.
* Cutting longer pieces for feathers, grasses or flowing water.
* Introducing different tile sizes to create movement and texture.
There are no right or wrong combinations—just opportunities to discover new effects and develop your own artistic style.
